Norman Rockwell Museum
houses the world's largest and most significant collection of
Rockwell's work. Among
the 574 original paintings and drawings are favorite Saturday Evening Post
covers including Four Freedoms and Stockbridge Main Street at
Christmas. More than 100,000 photographs, letters and other mementos are
archived here. The museum was founded in 1969 with help by Rockwell and his
wife and was located for 24 years in Stockbridge where Rockwell lived the
last 25 years of his life. Its present 36 acre site overlooking the
Housatonic River Valley, just off route 183, also contains Rockwell's studio
and library, shown here.
Shaker Museum and Library
are located in Old Chatham, New York, about 25 miles
north
of Copake. At the time of its founding in 1950, it was the first and only
public museum dedicated to preservation of Shaker life, work, art and
religious history. This collection of 28,000 Shaker objects and 19,000
archival pieces is America's most significant. Located close to the
country's most significant Shaker site, Mount Lebanon Shaker Village in New
Lebanon, it became natural for The Mount Lebanon Project to unite the two.
The World Monuments Fund included the entire Mount Lebanon site in its
2006-2007 list after designating the North Family site in New Lebanon to its
2004-2005 Watch List of the 100 Most Endangered Sites. Uniting the
collection with the site will provide an extraordinary resource for study of
America's Shaker movement.
Lindenwald - Martin van Buren's Home
is located on Route 9-H, 30 miles north of
Clermont, NY. This is
the retirement home of the country's eighth President who enlarged the
original Federal-style home and incorporated an Italianate style.
Clermont is the
500-acre historical site that was home to the Livingston family of New York
for more than 230
years. It is located on the east shore of the Hudson River in the
southwestern corner of Columbia County on Clermont Ave., off Woods Road. The
Clermont estate was established in 1728 when Robert Livingston, Jr. (1688 -
1775) inherited a tract of 13,000 acres along the Hudson River from his
father Robert Livingston (1654 - 1728), first Lord of Livingston Manor. This
Manor comprised the southern third of modern Columbia County, including
Copake, and was the second largest private landholding in colonial New York.
Clermont, "clear mountain", refers to the Catskill Mountains across the
Hudson River. Robert Livingston, Jr. was one drafter of the Declaration of
Independence, the country's first Minister of Foreign Affairs, Chancellor of
New York State, oath giver to America's first President, George Washington,
negotiator for the Louisiana Purchase and partner with Robert Fulton in the
development of the steamship, the Clermont.
Chesterwood Estate and Museum
was the summer home, studio and garden of
sculptor Daniel
Chester French (1850-1931). French enriched the country with sculptures of
The Minute Man at Concord, MA, The Continents at the US Custom
House in NY, Samuel F. Dupont Memorial Fountain and the Lincoln
Memorial in Washington, DC. This 122-acre estate and museum explores
French's style and creative process. On the estate's lawns and paths through
the woods are dozens of contemporary sculptures selected by a different
guest curator each summer. The estate, minutes from Stockbridge, is a
National Trust historic Site.
Olana - Frederick E. Church's Home
is itself a singular work of art created by the
painter, one of the
most important of the Hudson River School artists. The home, inspired by
Persian architecture, sits on a picturesque landscape enhanced by sweeping
views of the Hudson River and the Catskill Mountains. Olana is located on
route 9-G, 10 miles north of Clermont.
