Enjoyed the first visit at this site. Grant Langdon's comments are quite memorable. My grandfather Andrew Grau actually was the mechanic at the Copake Garage. Elmer was Andrew's son. I have lived in Tennessee since 1973. Retired temporarily now from BellSouth. Live about 12 miles south of Nashville. My brother Gerard is a surgeon in South florida. Get to Copake area about once a year now. My surviving Mother is in a nursing home in Philmont. I have wonderful childhood memories of Copake. My late dad Claude lived his entire life on Copake as a dairy farmer and as laborer at A.C. Bristol's.

Hi- I am looking for Amy Horowitz, her dad I believe used to own/run a summer camp on a lake in Copake before his death. I know that up until the mid 90's her family still had a house on a lake, but it would probably be under another name since her mom had remarried. Any help would be appreciated! I used to come up for visits and would hunt the place down if I thought I could find it. Thanks.

I started going to Camp Ferodel in 1943 and continued for twenty one consecutive summers. The absolute best times of my life. I've seen other camps, but none compare to the beauty that was Ferosdel. My dear friend, Allan White and I always say that we would go back in a New York minute. Hope to see you at the reunion.

I was born and raised in Copake. Lived there till I left for college. Now retired and living in Florida. My father Lyle Carl, was born in Millerton and spent most of his life in the Copake area. He was a carpenter. He retired and passed away Oct 97 in Apache Jct. AZ. My Mom moved there after she married. She worked for Peck's insuranse and at the local bank. She passed away this past Feb (04) here in Fl. Both are buried in the West Copake Cemetery. My wife Gillian and I will be touring thru the area in June 04 on our motorcycle. She has never seen my home town and I want to show here what I think is one of the nicest small towns in existence. If you happen to see a red/silver Harley rumbling thru town with Fl. plates. Toot or wave..It's gonna be us

JUdging from the comments of others who have visited this sie, I feel almost obligated to see for myself the wonders of this apparently marvelous community. Friendliness seems to be the operative word here. And the scenery is worth the venture. It is refreshing to come across the comments of many who have both witnessed and enjoyed the beauties of this place.I, too, will partake of an excursion that can only be bountiful and refreshing to my soul. Nothing compares to good mountain air and a populace that renders genuine warmness and smiles! Sounds like I've been there! Only in my dreams. Hope to get down this Fall! Thanks and God bless veryone!

Family had cottage in American Better Camping area by Lower Rhoda pond from 1941 to 1961. Bought from Grant Hill. Just renewed contact with friends of that period Bobby Dunief(Silverberg), Judy Marshall(Weinberger), Norma Tassler(Grau),Eddie Wiggers and others. Spent a few days last month with Bobby and Bill in their cottage. Wonderful memories. Have a memory that in 1944 when my parents enclosed the porch they use the Carl boys as carpenters.

Recently in conversation someone mentioned Copake NY and my memories came flooding back. At the time I was married and my husband and myself had purchased a house on Robinson Lake and for several years had a fabulous time summer and winter. Three of our children enjoyed those years as did many of our friends. Maybe next year I'll be able to take a trip back in time and see how Copake stands up against my memories. What wonderful times we had!

Copake’s early history is about land reform. I wrote a booklet; The Taconic Hills and Livingston Manor. Copake’s first settler was Matthews Abraham Van Deusen, He signed a leas with the first Lord of Livingston Manor in 1687 for a farm of about 80 acres. About 1750 the Massachusetts Bay Colony started to develop farms on the land they claimed that included Copake. Farmers with grants from the Bay Colony began to refuse to pay rent. The dispute about the border location with the Massachusetts Bay Colony was settled in 1757, but many still refused to pay rent. Things came to a head in 1844 when Sheriff Miller’s warrant for the sale of cattle were burned in front of Sweets Tavern.(Holsapple House) The movement grew to include much of the state and influenced land policy not only in the state but the nation I donated 90 of the 100 booklets printed to help fund the museum in Copake Falls. The short essay with color pictures is available there. Grant Dinehart Langdon, Cincinnati, Ohio

I went to Camp Woodielake for two summers back in the late 1960's. Does anyone know the lake it was on as I would love to go back and see the lake? Have a lot of nice memories of the Polar Bear Club, the competition games and learning how to horseback ride. I think I lived in Cabin One my first summer. I have the camp brochure/booklet in my scrapbook.

Beautiful site and pictures of your town. For the past two and a half years I have been researching counties in upstate NY with the possibility of relocating. I thought I had completed my research with my upcoming visit the end of October 2004. I had been communicating with people in Dutchess, Orange, Greene, and Albany county hoping to find a reasonable priced place to rent when someone suggested I check Columbia County. The story of how got to your website. Hopefully one day I will get to visit. Sophie

I would like to post this in honor of my beloved father, George J Linscott who passed away Sunday October 3rd in Boynton Beach Florida. The family will be holding a graveside service on Saturday, October 23rd at St Bridget's Cememtery. My father loved Copake and it is only fitting that he will be laid to rest here next to his beloved wife, Evelyn.

I have 4 photographs of Woodielake Camp that were made into postcards c.1950. Where was this camp? And would appreciate any information you have about it.

I went camping at Copake Falls with my family several times in the late 80's, and it has been one of my favorite places on earth ever since. In the winter of 95-96 I was living in Dutchess County and suffering through one of the coldest winters I could remember. At one point (maybe in January?) the sun poked through the clouds for the first time in weeks, and my younger brother and I decided to break our cabin fever with a hike up the trail at Bash Bish. The falls were all frozen and making weird gurgling noises, and that steel rail caused instant frostbite, but the snowy scenery was sublime in the near-zero weather. Last summer (2004) a friend of mine from high school got married, and several of his pals and I conspired to hold a bachelor party at Copake Falls. Despite the fact that the wedding was to be held in Southern Connecticut, the groom lived in Louisiana, and guests flew in from as far away as Germany, we pulled it off and had a fantastic time. Around midnight we hiked by moonlight to the falls, (much to the consternation of the other campers, I'm sure,)and sat on the rocks watching the dimly lit water, and taking in the moment. Apparently an older brother of the bride lost his pants. We're still not quite sure how that happenned. I can't wait to take my children there for a visit when they get to be old enough.

As a Copake residnt for 4 years now, I am thrilled to read all of the comments posted! Coming from Mt. Kisco in Westchester, its refreshing to hear all of the wonderful things that people are saying about "My Town," Copake! My husband worked for the company that built the Harlem Valley Rail Trail back in the 90's, and he brought me up here one weekend to show off "HIS" project. (It was his baby) From that one weekend I was hooked, and finally realized my dream of living here in Nov. 2000. I am building my own fond memories, but wish I could have known it from the start. Talk about a place where everyone knows your name! Seems so rich in heritage. To all who took time to comment, THANK YOU!!!
