Copake is a great little town, with the nicest people.

I grew up in Copake and have many happy memories there. My life has taken me all over the country, and we have settled for the last 14 years in the fastest growing town in California just outside of Sacramento. My wife Barb and I had two daughters (Wendy and Julie). Wendy is now a Psychologist, and Julie is an executive for Macy's department store in San Francisco. I work for the Roseville Telephone Company in sales, and I am also a professional magician part time. Barb works for a medical laboratory. Seeing this web page and the picures brought back many memories. I especially remember many hours at the Copake Falls Railroad station and riding the trains to Millerton or even into New York. I also remember the many hikes on Tom's Hill across the street from our house. Thanks again for the memories, and also for such a great web page!

I stayed in Copake from May-Sept.1970,and everyone there was so nice, loved going to the country looking stores,it was like walking into a western town, and the drug store,go in get an ice cream from the fountain, like years ago,and the country screen, loved walking for the cabin at the motel to town,it was beautiful,it had everything I would love to live around, except the cold weather, don't like the cold.If you'll reading this and never been to Copake go!It's worth it,haven't been back can't afford it,but one day maybe if the lord is willing. It's everything! I loved it.

What fun to find your Copake web page.
I spent every summer of my childhood in Copake. My famly and I started out in a tiny cottage at the ABC association near lower Rhoda Lake. Every beautiful memory I have of those years is treasured. In 1964,(then married to Bobby Tassler and mother to three children; Nina, Robin and Peter, we moved to West Copake. We opened Camp Oleana (located on the old Henry Astor estate, later Berkshire Pines Hotel). I still dream about the beauty of the Copake area. If I close my eyes I can still smell the sweetness of the pines and fallen leaves that would greet me crossing the train tracks at Copake Falls on the way to Bash Bish or the Ore Pit. I think I even remember the the smell of the lakes changing in August when the temperature cooled a bit and the stiff breezes warned us that soon another summer would come to an end.
Does anyone remember the square dances at the Grange as Pop Sweet raced to the end of the music before all his fiddle strings popped? How about Foster Hamm, Louie Sologub, Ruby and Hank Race, Dr. Bowerhan, the Holsapple House and the Hotel Copake? Long, long ago.

I loved my summers in Copake. My family had a home between long lake and lower Rhoda. What a great place for kids to spend their summer! Thanks for the Web site, this is a wonderful trip down memory lane.

I remember: the years were 1949 or so. Camp Pontiac and the Berkshire Pines. I would love to have more information on the Berkshire Pines as I was a kid, around 1948, and have memories of the Berkshire Pines, almost like snapshots in my mind. White cottages, with a porches in the back. Green grass comforting the small little houses like an emerald carpet. Gentle rolling hills. I was a camper at Camp Pontiac, a "Pioneer".
Where was the Berkshire Pines, either hotel or maybe it was a bungalow colony.

Spent all my summers in Copake going camping. Does anyone know if Christine Denis still lives in the area?

My grandfather, Anthony Drum, was a blacksmith in Copake. His wife, Dora Kopp, died in childbirth. My father, Charles A. Drum, lived there until he was a teenager, when he ran away from home, probably about 1910. My grandfather died in 1943 or so. My Dad had many tales about Copake, including an Uncle John, who lived "across the lake." I did visit a few years ago and found my Grandfather's house and blacksmith shop, now a lakeside cottage. I also found a couple of folks who remembered my Dad. I don't have much more information about my family on my father's side. Can anyone help? Thanks.

This is such a great site! I was a camp counselor at Camp Copake (Copake Country Club) from 1949 to 1955. It was on an island on Copake Lake. Spent all those happy summers there. Used to hitch (ooooh,if only my parents had known) to the Elm Tree Inn and the Flamingo for the best pizza in the world. I heard that part of the camp had burned down. Wonder if the private bungalows are still in use. Would appreciate ANY information about the place.

STILL MISS COPAKE!!!!!

I was a camper at Camp Pontiac for three summers: 1955-1957. Not only did I love camp, but as a kid from New York City with an eye allergy, it was great to escape the city air pollution and be free of symptoms for eight weeks each year.
I'd love to hear from any of my friends from that era.

We have a place on Mt.View that we retreat to almost every week-end. It's like our little peace of HEAVEN. Copake is such a great little town, where the people are so friendly. We never lack for something to do,be it an auction, tag sale, pot luck supper and just simply enjoying the fresh air.We have been coming to the area for over 22 years and have made many friends there. I think Copake and the surrounding area is New York State's "best kept secrets".

The website was absolutely informative. Copake is full of history. I have left New York when I was 21 years old and I have never been to Copake. On my next visit I will make a point to visit. I was going through my grandmother's things and I came across an old creamer with Copake NY written on it so I check out the web. By looking at the pictures I get a sense of peace.

Was wonderful to find this website! I had just done a google search for Camp Oleana and up came Norma Tassler's entry. For a few brief moments I was back at Camp Oleana in my mind, where my siblings, cousins and friends spent several summers that are etched into the family history. What a rare and wonderful camp it was in the mid to late sixties at a very unique time in our country's history. I still have a list of the folk songs we sang at meals and the "salty dog rag" folk dance is part of our family's celebrations. I would love to receive Norma Tassler's email and learn what became of the camp. I know that at some point it was sold and became a family camp ground.

I attended a girl's soccer game on september 18th--While your facilities(and your athletes) were impressive as a grandmother of an Ichabod Crane Player and also a former board member at Ichabod Crane I was surprised at some of the language on posters which were hanging on the booth and elsewhere.

Loved looking at your website. Wondering if anyone knows who to talk to regarding genealogy of that area. I have Curtis', Langdons, and Sabins from that area. Wondering if there is anyone still around connected to those names. My great-great grandfather was born there in 1839. Any information would be appreciated. My address is tjweidem@rockwellcollins.com

Hello to everyone who remembers Camp Oleana -- Norma, it was wonderful to see your entry. I was a counselor, Unit Leader, and pottery specialist at Oleana from its inception in 1964 until its last summer, 1969. I, too, remember the wonderful, committed, and song-filled people, the laughter, the folk dancing -- hi, Ellie! -- and the incredible sense of grandly extended family. We loved, we laughed, we cried, we danced, we sang, we shared, and got through the 60s. A beautiful, magical place -- I welcome hearing from campers, counselors, staff, and the Tassler family -- cd000910@mindspring.com Sharon
